Korean-Malaysian Marriage Guide 101 Part 1: Single Status Certificate

After going out for almost a decade, we have finally decided to tie a knot! As international marriage is fussy enough to begin with, COVID pandemic that hit us made it more chaotic.

Therefore, I have decided to write about this blog in order to enlighten all of you out there who might be in the same boat as me. So, for those who are interested, do read on!

Before that, I would like to give a huge credit to the blog stated below which have been extremely helpful in guiding me as I had much difficulty to go about the international marriage process due to its limited resources online.

 Step 1: Marital Status Certificate

The first and foremost step, regardless where you are, is to attain your MARITAL STATUS LETTER which is an evident proof that you are single.

The downside of it is that this letter can only and ONLY be obtained from Ibu Pejabat Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN) Putrajaya. In other words, you MUST return to Malaysia to get this done.

The address is as below:
Persiaran Sultan Sallhuddin Abdul Aziz Shah,
Precinct 1, 62000 Putrajaya,
Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya
Operating hour: 8am-5pm (Weekdays only)

Documents required:
  • Original IC (MyKad)
  • A hard copy of your spouse's passport details (also keep a copy inside your phone for your own reference)
Once you are inside the building, make your way to BAHAGIAN PERKAHWINAN DAN PENCERAIAN located on the first (1st) floor. Take a number and wait for your turn. Tell them that you want to marry a foreigner and need a marital status letter. The person in charge will then hand you 2 forms (JPN KC.09, Statutory Declaration form)

Marriage and Divorce Section (1st Floor)

Form 1-JPN KC.09

Form 2-Statutory Declaration Form (to be signed by the Commissioner of Oath)

Once you have gotten the 2 forms as shown above, take your time to fill up all the relevant details as per instructed. Worry not as the person in charge will guide you on this. After that, proceed to the Ground floor to find Commissioner of Oath to sign your statutory declaration form. Do take note on their operating hour which is 8.30am-11.30am (Weekdays only). Similarly, take your number and wait for your turn. The process is fairly straightforward. The officer will check all the details before he signed and stamped. This procedure will cost you RM4.00. The completed form will look like this as shown below. Next, return to the first floor BAHAGIAN PERKAHWINAN DAN PENCERAIAN.

Finalised Statutory Declaration Form

Again, take your number and wait. Once your number has been called, present your original IC together with the hard copy of your spouse's passport details along with the 2 completed forms and hand in to the officer in charge. He/She will then ask you to check the details again prior the final processing. The fee is RM5.00.

Once you have gotten your marital status certificate, you may now proceed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the certification. The travel distance between the 2 places take approximately 10 minutes via car and the grab costs about RM5.00.

Marital Status Certificate (First Look)

The address is as below:
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia
Wisma Putra
No. 1, Jalan Wisma Putra
Precinct 1, 62602 Putrajaya
Operating hour: 9pm-4pm (Weekdays only)

At the entrance, the security will ask for your purpose of visit. Tell them that you are here for the consular service. They will then ask for your original IC, subsequently, hand you an entry pass. Bear in mind that you need to wear the pass at all times once you entered the premise or you will be denied entry.
Once you have reached the counter, inform the recipient that you are here for the consular service. You will then be given a number and again, wait for your turn. Submit your marital status certificate and proceed to pay for another RM10.00. And you are DONE! For now at least...
The final certificate will look something like this and it is valid for 150 days.

Overall, the whole process took me more or less an hour 30 minutes. Not too bad isn't it?
'My advice is to reach JPN as early as possible and to do it in the morning if you want to attain the certificate on the same day itself.'
Next step, is to travel to South Korea for the registration of marriage! Well, at least for me since my hubby-to-be is currently residing there. Unfortunately, due to COVID, Korea has imposed travel restrictions which made this journey of mine more difficult.
Well, I shall take a big heave of relief for now👯

Stay tune for more updates!
